Jack O Lanterns on Autumn Leaves

The average weight gain between Halloween and New Years Day is 12 pounds.

Most illnesses come between Halloween and Valentines Day when many are pumping their bodies (and their children’s bodies) with lots of sugary treats. Sugar affects our immune system and vitamin C absorption.

How can we avoid the weight gain and the illnesses and have a happier and healthier holiday?

Planning! Taking a few minutes a day to plan can really help. What should you plan for? Each night before you go to bed make a short list, not more than 3 or 4 items, of what you want to accomplish the next day. This will keep you focused and eliminate the overwhelming feeling of where to start. Any additional tasks that get done that day are a bonus.

Plan Your Meals

Plan your meals – breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Spend an hour or two on the weekend (or whenever works with your schedule) to plan out your meals for the next week, make a grocery list (saves time at the store), grocery shop and prep any food you can for the week. Examples of foods you can prep for the week would include: egg muffins or protein waffles for breakfasts, salads in a jar for lunches, chopping veggies, getting any marinades/dips/dressings ready, putting together a few croc pot meals.

Take Time For You!

This can be hard to do anytime of the year, but especially during the hectic holiday season. What does taking care of you mean? This may be different for each person. Maybe that means starting the day with a set amount of journal or meditation time, a daily walk or workout, or spending time with friends? You decide what you need in your daily life to keep you happy and healthy and make it a non-negotiable. Tips for making this commitment to yourself and keeping it might include blocking out time on a schedule or have an accountability partner. Find a friend who you can help and wants to help you in return, touch base once (or how many times you agree upon) a day and let each other know when you are doing your non negotiable activity, that the activity has been completed, how it went, or whatever works.
